If you've ever used the search term, 'making money online' chances are you've seen a thing or two about affiliate marketing.  Right now, when it comes to making money online, affiliate marketing is creating quite a buzz.  It's one of the few programs that will allow you to make money without paying for something to start.  You also don't have to worry as much about scams.  Although there are probably some scams out there that are associated with affiliate marketing, it's easy to find a legitimate company that wants you to help them out and doesn't mind paying for it.  If you haven't researched affiliate programs and want to know how they work, here is the rundown for you.

The Way it Works:
There are companies out there that want your help in marketing their products.  You find a good company that has an affiliate program and sign up.  The legitimate companies allow you to sign up for no cost to you.  When you sign up with that company, they give you a link to their page that is embedded with your unique user id.  Wherever you place this link, if someone clicks on it and goes back to the company's page, the company knows that the referral came from you.  When the individual purchases something from the company, you make either a flat rate or a percentage of the sale.

Step By Step Process:
There is a common misconception that with an affiliate marketing program, you don't have to do any work.  That's not true.  In order to make a good income, which is possible, you will have to do some work.  Plain and simple, nothing comes to you for free.  The first thing you will want to do if you are considering an affiliate program is find a company that you will sign up with.  Here are some tips to help you do just that:

Ø Look for a company which sells a service or product that you know something about.  It will help you market their products better if you have some general knowledge about what you are selling. 

Ø You want to make sure that you are marketing a quality product.  You don't want to ruin your reputation as a person who refers people to certain products.  It's a good way to make zero money.

Now that you've chosen a great product to market, the next step is to decide how you are going to market the product.  A common mistake in affiliate marketing is to get a website and place a whole list of links to products with little or no information.  This is a bad idea, and you will probably not make any money.  What you want to do is build a great website with at least 10 or 15 pages of information.  More is better.  This is why you should choose products to market that you enjoy, or are knowledgeable about.

You want to convince the public that you are an expert on the subject, and they will trust you more.  This will help you have a better chance of doing a good job getting potential customers to the company's site.  So, make a great website with unique content.  Don't just make the content about the company you're affiliating with.  It needs to be your content, not that company's content.  For example, if you were affiliating with a company that sold wedding favors, you would make your website all about weddings. You could include pages of articles on how to plan for your wedding, or great ideas the wedding reception.  Give the potential customers all of the information you can before you try and get them to click on the link to the company's website.

You might include some great 'homemade wedding favor ideas,' or list the favorite wedding favors of wedding guests, the history of wedding favors, things like that.  Then, somewhere within your content, you want to give a great recommendation.  You could say at the bottom of the 'handmade wedding favor ideas' something like this.  "Unfortunately, a lot of people don't have time to make their own wedding favors.  People lead hectic lives these days and it's hard to sit down and take time out for a large project.  I had the same problem before my wedding, and I found a great place to purchase unique and charming wedding favors." 

Then you add the link.  That's more than enough of a referral.  You don't want to have banners and advertisements all over your page, because potential customers will be turned off by that.  When you include a personal testimony such as the one above, you give your customers the benefit of being referred by someone who has 'used the products' from the company's page.  People want to buy things that are recommended.  To them, it means that there's more of a chance they will be pleased with the products, since someone else was.

This is the best way to do affiliate marketing programs.  You build up trust in the people who visit your site.  That's why you want to give them all the information you can.  They see that you truly want to help them with their 'wedding planning.'  They read your information, get excited about wedding favors, they see that you've used a certain company's favors and were pleased, and they click on the link to check it out.  This is how successful people make money through affiliate programs.  It's one of the greatest ways to make money on the internet, if you go about it in the right way.
