Adsense Introduction

Adsense is an advertising program where webmasters can make money by displaying contextual ads on their sites that are generated by Google. What that means in simple English is that if you have a website that is all about dogs, Adsense will display advertising that matches your site's theme in that they will serve up advertising related to dogs, dog supplies, dog accessories and the like. It won't, under normal conditions deliver information related to automotive supplies if your site is primarily about dogs.

This is good for the advertiser because they want their advertising displayed on websites with people who are interested in their products. It also works well for the webmaster because people interested in dogs are more likely to click on the advertising related to dogs than related to cars and vice versa.

Below is a step-by-step guide to help you get started with Adsense.

1. You need to join the Google Adsense program after you have an established website. Once accepted you become what is known as an Adsense Publisher.

Adsense supplies you with your own special code which looks like: pub-1234567891234. This code is unique for ever advertiser and allows Adsense to track how many people click on ads located on your website. For every ad clicked-upon, advertisers pay you a percentage called Pay-Per-Click. With your code you can create ad code to place on your website.

2. Create your customer Adsense code:

Once accepted, you can log in and create a custom sized ad that matches your website ad spaces and theme. What that means is you can have different sized ads from buttons to full skyscraper ads based on how much space you want to devote to Adsense advertising. Once you have designed what type of code, color and size - you generate a output code that looks like the following:

<script type="text/javascript"><!--
google_ad_client = "your publisher id will be here";
google_ad_width = width of chosen ad format;
google_ad_height = height of chosen ad format;
google_ad_format = "chosen ad format";
google_ad_type = "whether text only or text and image ad";
google_ad_channel ="the channel you have placed this ad in";
google_color_border = "chosen border color";
google_color_bg = "chosen background color";
google_color_link = "chosen link color";
google_color_url = "chosen url color";
google_color_text = "chosen text color";
//--></script>
<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">
</script>

3. Take the generated code and place place it in your website template. If done correctly, an ad will automatically begin to appear. If a public service looking ad appears, don't panic. Google is simply syncing advertising to your website so that after a short time it will start delivering advertising that matches what your website content.

4. Selection of text or text and image advertising. Depending on what you have selected Google will begin to deliver either picture ads or text based advertising in the size that you specify.
